It is National Hospice Palliative Care Week in Canada. The campaign is held annually to raise awareness of the value of hospice palliative care in all communities.
Palliative care is person-centered care and involves helping those facing serious health-related suffering due to life-limiting illness. Extensive and quality palliative care provides adequate support for every aspect of a person’s life that is impacted by illness. According to Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA), it is crucial to amplify the importance of palliative care to improve knowledge of and access to services and empower families, and the health care community. In addition to offering holistic care to support mind, body, soul, and family when immediate, palliative care can be provided in any environment. From hospice to long-term care, to hospital, to home, there are no limits to where someone can receive palliative care to meet their needs.
Through palliative care, families can navigate the challenges that ensue from when a loved one is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Regardless of the setting of care, a person’s illness or prognosis, or their postal code, palliative care can assist. There is Palliative Care Everywhere!
