Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is a time to educate everyone about the importance of regular screening, early detection, and prevention measures.
With the slogan, “Cancer doesn’t wait, why should you?”, the annual campaign is a reminder that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable if detected in its early stages. According to Colorectal Cancer Canada(“CCC”), colorectal cancer is also known as colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending on where the cancer comes from, and it is a cancer that affects either the colon or rectum, or both.
67 Canadians are diagnosed with colorectal cancer daily, making it a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Canada. This month, CCC is calling attention to the urgency of screening with several activities. Colorectal cancer isn’t just an old person’s disease, and due to this, all Canadians should be more aware of the signs and symptoms as well as what to do if they originate.
One can get the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) screening test for colorectal cancer to detect small amounts of blood in one’s stool that is not visible to the naked eye. Early warning signs of the colorectal cancer include unknown changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, rectal bleeding, weakness and fatigue, anemia, caused by iron deficiency, and among others. Participating in routine screening and receiving additional diagnostic tests from the doctor is an essential way to reduce the risk of developing this disease.
